THEMES TO STUDY FOR THE 2ND PARTIAL / 2010

UNIT 9. “BRAINS”.
TOPIC: Brain Functions, Learning Styles, Brainfingerprinting

A. Reading:
1. Identifying a Writer's point of view

B. Grammar
2. Restrictive Adjective Clauses :
3. Practice verb tenses (Simple Present, Simple Past, Past Participle, continuous form)

C. Listening and Speaking:
4. The Mozart Effect
5. Conversation: Making Excuses

D. Vocabulary:
6. Prefixes im,-in, and un- (invisible, unsuccessful, impossible)
7. Suffixes –ful, -ly (successful, beautiful, happily, sadly, fastly, perfectly)
8. Vocabulary in the unit’s topic. (context clues)

E. Writing:
9. Adding information to expand on an idea.
***Example:
- We went to a ranch and there was a sign. (simple idea)
- We went to a great ranch that was near a river and there was a big sign that said: “be careful with the crocodiles”. (expanded idea)

4. Conversation: Ending a conversation

C. Grammar “The Passive Verb Form”.
5. Using reported speech (passive v.)
***Example:
The teacher checks the homeworks (active voice)
subject + verb + predicate

The homeworks are checked by the teacher. (passive v.)
new subject + verb TO BE + verb in p.participle + predicate.

D. Vocabulary
6. Introduce vocabulary with context clues.

F. Writing:

UNIT 11. “SLEEPING & DREAMING”.

A. Reading:
1. Cause and Effect / CRITICAL THINKING
2. Dreaming the Future

B. Listening & Speaking:
3. Listening: I wonder What it Means?
4. Conversation: Showing that you are paying attention.

C. Grammar:
5. “Future Real Conditional” (IF)
***Example: We will go to the beach if it doesn’t rain tomorrow.
6. Review grammar points units 9 & 10.

D. Vocabulary:
6. Vocabulary in context.
7. Review of vocabulary words from units 9 and 10. (correct spelling and usage)

E. Writing:
8. Writing about cause and effect. (connect causes with effects to retell what happened). Use connection words like: so, because, that’s why, etc.
